First 48 Hours After a Brazilian Wax: What to Do (and Avoid)

Van Ness Corridor / Civic Center (Lower Nob Hill area), San Francisco, California
The most important rule after a Brazilian wax is simple: keep the area clean, cool, and hands-off for the first 24 to 48 hours. Your skin is freshly exfoliated from waxing, so heat, sweat, friction, and heavily scented products can turn a smooth result into irritation fast. At True U Aesthetics in San Francisco, our Brazilian wax is a 30-minute service using premium wax designed for sensitive skin. Aftercare is what protects that clean, hygienic finish, especially if you’re heading back into layered clothes and public transit around Civic Center.
Your first 24 hours after waxing: keep it cool, dry, and low-friction
Right after your Brazilian wax, your skin often looks a little pink and feels warm. That’s normal. What usually causes problems is piling on heat and friction before your skin has a chance to settle.
For the first 24 hours, we generally recommend: no hot baths, no hot tubs, no sauna/steam room, no swimming, no heavy workouts, and no sexual activity. Heat and sweat can trigger bumps and stinging, even if you have “tough skin.”
Showering is fine, but keep it gentle
Yes, you can shower after a Brazilian wax. Stick with lukewarm water, use a fragrance-free cleanser, and rinse well. Pat dry with a clean towel. Don’t scrub, don’t use a loofah, and skip body washes that feel “minty” or strongly scented.
What to wear (especially in foggy, layered San Francisco weather)
San Francisco summers can be mild and foggy, so a lot of us layer up. For the first day, choose loose cotton underwear and breathable pants or a skirt. Tight jeans, shapewear, and synthetic leggings can rub the area and trap heat. If you’re commuting through Van Ness/Civic Center or sitting for long office hours, friction builds up more than you think, so comfort comes first.
The next 24 to 48 hours: avoid sweat, pools, and “let me just check” habits
Day two is when people feel fine and accidentally overdo it. If you’re tempted to get back to everything at once, keep this in mind: waxing leaves follicles open for a bit. Sweat, bacteria in pools and hot tubs, and repeated touching can lead to irritation and bumps.
Quick “do this instead” list: If you’re itchy, press a cool compress through clean fabric for a few minutes. If you’re sweaty, take a quick lukewarm rinse and change into dry underwear. If you’re commuting, bring a spare pair of breathable underwear for later in the day.
Workouts
We generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours to work out, depending on how sweaty and high-friction your workout is. A gentle walk is usually fine. Hot yoga, cycling, and anything that keeps you in tight clothing and constant movement tends to be the worst choice right after a bikini wax or Brazilian wax.
Swimming and hot tubs
Hold off on pools, ocean swims, and hot tubs for at least 48 hours. Chlorine, salt, and heat can sting, and shared water can raise your risk of irritation. If you booked with us and you’re heading to Oakland, Sausalito, or anywhere across the Bay for a weekend plan, schedule your wax with enough cushion so you’re not forcing it.
Days 3 to 7: the ingrown-hair plan for Brazilian and bikini wax results
If you tend to get ingrowns, this is the week that matters. The goal is to keep skin calm early, then gently encourage hair to grow out cleanly.
When to exfoliate
Start gentle exfoliation after about 3 to 5 days. Earlier than that can feel like sandpaper on sensitive skin. Choose one approach and keep it simple.
Gentle physical exfoliation
A soft washcloth with light pressure in the shower. No harsh scrubs, no gritty sugar/salt scrubs, and no aggressive brushes.
Gentle chemical exfoliation
A mild, fragrance-free exfoliant (think AHA/BHA style products) used a few times a week. Start slow. If you feel stinging, back off.
What to avoid all week
Don’t pick at bumps, and don’t try to “dig out” an ingrown hair. That’s how you end up with a scab or discoloration. Also skip strongly fragranced lotions, self-tanner on the area, and anything that makes you feel overheated and sticky for long periods.
Products we like after waxing: fragrance-free cleanser, aloe gel, and clean underwear
You don’t need a complicated shelf for good waxing aftercare. You need the right basics used consistently, especially if you’re trying to stay event-ready on a tight schedule.
- Cleanse: a gentle, fragrance-free wash and lukewarm water. Rinse well.
- Soothe: an alcohol-free, aloe-based gel or a soothing witch hazel product. Apply a thin layer. Let it dry before dressing.
- Protect: loose cotton underwear and breathable clothing for 1 to 2 days. Change out of sweaty clothing fast.
- Hands off: no scratching, no rubbing, no checking in the mirror every hour. Calm skin stays smooth longer.
We see clients come to our Van Ness Corridor studio from San Francisco, Daly City, Colma, South San Francisco, Sausalito, and Oakland. The routine stays the same no matter where you’re traveling afterward.
What’s normal after a Brazilian wax, and when to call us
A little redness, tenderness, or tiny spots of blood right after waxing can happen, especially if it’s your first time or you’re close to your cycle. That should calm down quickly. If something feels off, we want to hear from you.
Reach out to our team if you notice spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, fever, or bleeding that doesn’t stop. Those aren’t typical “wax day” reactions, and you shouldn’t wait it out.

Our Van Ness/Civic Center location is convenient for commuters, and many people prefer an early-morning or late-afternoon appointment so they’re not rushing, overheating, and hopping on transit right after.
