Nervous About permanent makeup correction? What to Expect at Your First Visit

Permanent makeup correction first visit in San Francisco consultation and mapping

We hear it all the time, you’re excited about a correction, but nervous about what it’ll feel like and what you’ll look like while it heals. One of our long-time clients called Lena “an absolute magician” and said her warm, welcoming demeanor makes the studio feel relaxing and comfortable. That matters, especially when you’re trusting someone to fix old pigment.

Here’s the straight answer: Correction is a targeted permanent makeup session to fix or update existing pigment. Expect a consult and photo review, mapping and color planning, topical numbing, a 60 to 120 minute procedure (our Correction service is typically 90 minutes), mild to moderate discomfort, 7 to 14 days of surface healing, and usually a 4 to 8 week follow-up to finish the result.

Prep for a Correction in San Francisco: 72 hours that make a difference

The best correction appointments start before you walk in. Bring clear photos of the brow or lip color and shape you actually want, plus any photos you have of the older work when it was fresh. And tell us where you had it done, roughly how long ago, and what you’ve noticed over time (fading, turning gray, going warm, uneven edges).

Quick prep list (we generally recommend): avoid alcohol, NSAIDs, intense retinol/chemical exfoliation, and sunburn for at least 48 to 72 hours before your appointment. If your skin is irritated or freshly peeled, pigment retention tends to suffer.

If you’re in the Van Ness Corridor or Civic Center area and commuting through Lower Nob Hill, this is the kind of prep that fits into a normal workweek. Make it simple: gentle cleansing, no aggressive actives, and don’t show up sunburned. San Francisco’s mild, often foggy summers can actually make healing easier since you’re usually not battling intense sun, but you still want to be careful with exposure.

One more thing: corrections are different than touch-ups. You’re not “freshening up” our own work. We’re analyzing someone else’s pigment, then deciding how to neutralize tones and rebuild shape in a way that looks natural on your face.

Inside your 90-minute Correction session: consult, map, numb, correct

When you arrive, we start with a real conversation. Lena takes time to explain what we’re doing and why, and you’ll never feel rushed. A lot of clients stick with us for years because they like that pace, and because we’re happy to adjust so you feel good about the final result.

Step 1: pigment and shape check (this is the “correction” part)

We’ll look closely at what’s already there: the undertone (ash/gray, warm/red, etc.), how saturated it is, and where the shape went off track. If you’re correcting older or heavy pigment, we’ll be honest if it’s going to take more than one round.

Step 2: mapping and color plan

This is where your photos matter. We’ll map the shape and talk through what’s realistic with the pigment you have. Our goal is to neutralize unwanted tones and restore a clean, balanced look, not chase a trend that doesn’t suit your face.

Step 3: numbing and the actual correction

Pain is usually manageable with topical numbing. Sensation tends to feel like pressure, a vibration, and a few brief sharper spots. One of our brow clients summed it up perfectly: the “numbing was top notch.” If you need a pause, tell us. We’ll stop, re-numb if appropriate, and keep communication open the whole time.

Healing after Correction: the 7 to 14 day reality (and how to keep pigment)

Right after your correction, the area will usually look darker or more defined than the “finished” result. That’s normal. You may notice mild redness, tenderness, and a tight, dry feeling as it starts to heal. The surface healing window is typically 7 to 14 days, and the color will soften as it settles.

Aftercare basics (we generally recommend): keep the area dry, skip pools/saunas, and avoid heavy sweating while the surface heals. Follow the product instructions we give you, because the wrong ointment or over-washing can affect retention.

Plan for stage two: most corrections need a follow-up in 4 to 8 weeks to refine tone and edges once the skin fully settles.

If you’re traveling in from Daly City, Colma, South San Francisco, Sausalito, or Oakland, we’ll help you time that follow-up so it doesn’t become a hassle. For many commuters coming through Civic Center and Van Ness, this is an easy visit to fit in around transit and a workday.

Two-stage results: when one Correction is enough (and when it isn’t)

Here’s the part that builds real confidence: a good correction plan doesn’t promise a miracle in one pass. It looks at what’s in your skin and sets expectations you can actually live with.

If the existing pigment is light and faded, one correction plus a follow-up refinement often gets you to a clean, natural look. If the pigment is older, very saturated, or has shifted strongly in tone, multiple sessions may be the right call. We’ll talk you through that before we start, so you’re not surprised later.

“She takes her time to explain her services to you and answer any questions you might have.”

one of our long-time clients

That “no surprises” approach is a big reason some clients have followed us location to location, and why people have even made special trips back to San Francisco because they didn’t want to go anywhere else.

A few Correction tips we’ll tell you upfront (so you don’t overthink it)

Bring your questions. Seriously. People tell us they like that we create a comfortable setting and a safe space to discuss treatments, with no pressure if you decide a service isn’t right for you. That’s how we work in our Van Ness Corridor studio, and it’s how you end up with brows or lips that feel like you, not like a template.

  • If you’re nervous about discomfort, say it at the start. We’ll talk you through numbing and we’ll pause when you need it.
  • Don’t plan a big event during the first 7 to 14 days. You’ll be healing and the color will shift as it settles.
  • If you’re commuting in from Oakland or South San Francisco, choose an appointment time that gives you a calm hour afterward. Rushing makes aftercare harder.

If you’re ready for a plan, not a guess: book a Correction (90 minutes, starting at $350). We’ll review what you currently have, map out the fix, and leave you with clear aftercare and a realistic timeline for the follow-up.

Correction focuses on fixing or updating existing permanent makeup that may have the wrong undertone, uneven shape, or older saturated pigment, often done by a different artist. A touch-up is usually a refinement on work that’s already in the right direction, meant to refresh color and small details.

Bring clear inspiration photos and any pictures you have of your older work. We generally recommend avoiding alcohol, NSAIDs, intense retinol/chemical exfoliation, and sunburn for at least 48 to 72 hours before your appointment so your skin is calm and ready to hold pigment.

It depends on the area and your sensitivity that day, but most people describe it as manageable with topical numbing. You’ll usually feel pressure and vibration with a few brief sharper spots. If you need a break, let us know and we’ll pause.

Most corrections happen in two stages: the in-studio correction and a follow-up visit 4 to 8 weeks later to refine tone and shape after the skin settles. Older or heavier pigment may take more than one correction session before you reach the final look.

We generally recommend keeping the area dry and avoiding pools, saunas, and heavy sweating for 7 to 14 days while the surface heals. For makeup, wait until the surface is healed and follow the product instructions we give you, since the wrong products too soon can interfere with retention.

A corrected result should look cleaner and more balanced in shape, with improved tone that doesn’t pull overly warm or ashy compared to what you started with. Expect the color to look stronger at first, then soften as it heals over 7 to 14 days, with final refinements often done at the 4 to 8 week follow-up.
